DIY hand sanitizer + free gift
As we are now over the worst that November was to bring, I wanted to share with you a quick DIY project. I hosted a live video on Facebook earlier today, and wanted to follow up with the recipe! It's an immune boosting hand sanitizer, and is inexpensive to make! I realized that I needed something like this in my purse after one day last week when Tom crawled around both the doctor's office and children's corner at the library. I'm not a germaphobe, buttttt I did rub OnGuard and coconut oil on his feet and chest when we got home.
I borrowed the recipe from The Essential Life book, which is a fantastic book! It is as follows:
Immune Boosting Hand Sanitizer
5 tablespoons aloe vera gel
4 tablespoons water
1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil
10 drops OnGuard (or Thieves, if you're a Young Living user!) [properties: immunity/protective blend; oils used are antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and disinfectant]
5 drops Wild Orange essential oil [properties: energizing, antidepressant, antiseptic, immunostimulant]
I combined all the ingredients in a glass. It will start off kind of chunky, but with constant stirring, they will all combine. Pour into a squeezable container (I used a 3oz, and the concoction almost filled it), or whatever one you want to put the sanitizer in. Voila! You're done.
I was hesitant to make this, as hand sanitizer usually dries out my skin. But, BUT! This stuff smells so nicely, and moisturizes in the best way possible, basically, not in a yucky "ew I've still got lotion on my hands" sort of a way.
Let me break down the price for you.....well let me rephrase that: let's hope my math skills are enough to break this down:
• $3.74 - Aloe vera gel, 16 oz
5 T = 2.5 oz, so at $0.24 an oz, that's $0.58 worth of gel.
• $1.19 - Vitamin E oil, 2.5 oz
1/2 t = 0.08 oz, so at $0.48 an oz, that's $0.04 worth of oil.
• $32.00 - OnGuard essential oil protective blend, 15mL
Approximately 250 drops per 15 mL; so $0.13/drop, multiplied by 10 drops gives us $1.30.
• $10.50 - Wild Orange essential oil, 15 mL
Following the above, $0.04/drop, times 5 drops equals $0.21.
Total cost per batch of sanitizer: $2.13. I used a 3oz bottle, and it's almost filled. Not a bad deal, especially in comparison to other hand sanitizers with high quality ingredients that you can buy at places such as Whole Foods.
I shared this on my personal Facebook page, and will share it again: for anyone who places a product order over $50 in the months of November and December, I will send a 5mL bottle of Wild Orange! You can find my shop under the 'Shop' tab!
